The Bangkok Crime Victim Survey is the first victimization survey ever conducted in Thailand. The key objective of this pilot project is to obtain the statistical estimate of the victimization, both reported and not reported to the authorities, resulting from the crimes that took place in Bangkok as well as relevant details such as those pertaining the victims and their relationships to the offenders, time and location of the crimes, the circumstance where the crimes took place, and the weapons used. The project also aims at developing the database and the report on crime victimization which will be disseminated to the criminal justice system agencies and the general public. Another key aspect involves the analysis of the results to identify and explain the crime phenomenon in Bangkok. The approach developed under this pilot phase will be further refined and put to use for conducting a nation-wide victimization survey in the future. The crimes covered in the survey consist of four categories: 1) property crime; 2) personal crime; 3) sexual crime; and 4) identity theft (defined here as the use of personal or financial information or documents to commit crimes), all of which took place in Bangkok during the year 2005 (from 1 January to 31 December 2005). The survey was conducted from June 2006 to February 2007.
